The Ford F-150 hybrid will be a new electrified version of the popular F-150 pickup truck. At a press conference this month, Ford’s CEO Mark fields outlined some of the company’s goals with the new hybrid.

Based on preliminary information, the F-150 Hybrid will have the unique ability to act as a mobile power source on the job sites. Knowing that their customers value the reliability of the model for large tasks, the automaker says it intends not to sacrifice the towing capacity. Unfortunately, there are no other solid specs right now. Currently, the pickup truck market does not have a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, at least in mass production. The automotive industry is only now getting its first plug-in minivan in the form of Chrysler Pacifica hybrid.

Interestingly, Ford also plans to introduce a Mustang hybrid around the same time as the F-150. The details have not been published, but the manufacturer of automakers intends to offer comparable performance with its main V8. In other news, Ford will finally offer its first F-150 diesel starting with model year 2018 as part of a comprehensive upgrade of its best-selling truck. The new variant will be based on a 3.0-liter power-running diesel engine that competes with the 1500 EcoDiesel RAM.

Stay tuned for updates that are advertised. The Ford F-150 hybrid does not yet have a release date. It is currently expected to go on sale around 2020. Ford reaffirms its promise of hybrid vans with the recent announcement of a hybrid Ford F-150, which must reach the market in 2020. The details are still scarce. We don’t know exactly what combination of the propeller an F-150 hybrid will use. Ford did say that the electrified F-150S will be built on its Dearborn truck plant, it will offer “powerful towing and payload capacity”, and be able to function as a mobile generator. Ford plans to sell the F-150 hybrid in North America and the Middle East.

Ford joins several other companies in its thrust for the electrification of the truck. Nikola a semi truck concept and the concept of Chevy Colorado ZH2 are aimed at fuel cell technology for pure electric propulsion. The W-15 farm horse concept is the goal of a plug-in of the electric transmission truck, with a gasoline engine that provides electricity for an extended range. All these concepts also offer the characteristic of the mobile electric generator. Consider feeding a job site, your home or your camp using your truck. Tesla is said to be working in a totally electric pickup truck.

Ford did not specify that the 2020 F-150 will be a hybrid plug-in. This probably means that the electrified F-150 will use a combustion engine and electric motors to drive the truck. In other words, the truck will not be able to go to an extended distance in electric power alone or tow/haul maximum loads only in electric power.

On the other hand, GM, Ford and RAM offer (or are planning to offer) a Turbo-diesel engine option in their half-ton or medium-sized vans. RAM has been selling the 3.0 L V6 EcoDiesel for a couple of years. GM offers a 2.8 L I4 Turbo-diesel in the Chevy Colorado and GMC cannon.
