And from the looks of it, it’s a curve that this vehicle can’t handle very well. What exactly is going on with the 2021 Ford Explorer, and is it actually one of the least reliable SUVs of 2021?
The Explorer is nothing but a headache for the American manufacturer this year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled the 2020 Ford Explorer 10 times in the past year.

Other significant drawbacks include sagging motor mounts, fuel tank intake valve that is not welded properly, possible driveshaft fracture, and more.

2021 Ford Explorer Timberline
In October of last year, Ford Authority reported that the Ford Explorer would get King Ranch and Timberline trim levels for the 2021 model year.
Since then, we’ve spied Explorer Timberline prototypes testing not just once or twice, but three times, and we’ve also Seen the King Ranch on one occasion so far.
But in addition to its unique styling features, we noticed something particularly interesting about the Timberline, a new logo, designed to resemble the outline of a mountain range, which is present on the front bumper.
While the King Ranch trim level has been around for a while on Ford F-Series pickups, including the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty, Timberline is brand new to the automaker.
It will mean a more off-road version of the Ford Explorer, as we’ve previously reported, and the Timberline branding is very similar to Subaru’s Wilderness Edition Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek that are in the works.
These light-duty off-road vehicles, which also include the Ford Bronco Sport and the future Ford Fusion Active, are designed to appeal to people who enjoy the great outdoors and feature several enhancements that make them capable of light off-road activities.

We expect the Timberline Explorer to launch soon for the 2021 model year as a rugged version of Ford’s old crossover, which is basically an off-road-focused version of the Explorer ST.
Like all other Explorer variants, the Timberline Explorer will be produced at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen several 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline prototypes being tested not once, but twice. And now we’ve found another Timberline prototype hanging around, this time in Oxford White paint.
The lighter color gives us a better view of the orange stripe across the Timberline bumper, as well as the matching orange tow hook, and provides a nice contrast to the dark trim and crossed wheels.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline also features a unique grille design with a single stem that extends the width of the grille.
Also missing is the “Explorer” script that normally runs under the hood, while the fog lamps have a completely new design.

While the 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline doesn’t seem to ride much higher than the rest of the Ford Explorer models, the new off-road focused variant may use adjustable air suspension, as we recently speculated.
The Timberline rear bumper has also been overhauled, presumably to increase the Timberline’s departure angle, and the dual exhaust has been hidden for the same reason.
Perhaps most interestingly, the Timberline sports a “4WD” badge on the rear tailgate, although the Explorer comes in an all-wheel-drive configuration. Finally, while other prototypes had a Timberline badge on the elevator doors, this one did not.

Leading drivers among us will prefer the Platinum model, with a 365-hp 3.0-liter Biturbo V-6 engine, or the Explorer ST sports car, which uses the 400-hp version of the same engine.

So, it’s still one of the most important and profitable vehicles in the Ford lineup. But it’s not one of the best.
Based on the older version of the Volvo S80 front-wheel-drive platform, the performance and interior quickly fall below standard.
This sixth-generation vehicle strives to address all of these shortcomings and add a whole new level of comfort, flexibility, and performance.
At the heart of this is an all-new rear-drive unibody platform that uses the engine longitudinally. One of the first features using the Modular Hybrid transmission driveline.
This simple-sounding but undoubtedly very complicated setup combines a 44bhp electric motor between the 335bhp V6 gas-powered engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Its mission is more to increase performance, add lower-end torque, and throttle response than to aid savings. Expect to see its version in the upcoming Bronco and the F-150 hybrid pick-up too, soon.
Other engines in the range include a 300bhp in-line four, plus two versions of the 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6. 365bhp units are installed in the Platinum variant. And the full-house 400bhp version in Explorer ST.
This is the second time Ford has used the sacred ST tag on an SUV. We hope it gets a lot better than the last time the company used it to spice up the end-of-life Edge.
Despite the all-new platform, the Explorer 2020 design is still instantly recognizable, with its forward-facing C-pillar and the trademark trapezoidal Ford company grille.
The interior has been completely redesigned with varying degrees of success depending on which chair you occupy.
Immediately, the new Explorer steers, brakes, and accelerates much better than the model it replaces. Steering is more pronounced, body roll is better checked and as a result, you feel much more confident when you throw.
Off-road, the Explorer is more than adequate to handle even wild climbs, rocks, water, and mud. These observations apply to all models tested.
The real difference lies in the drive path. While this is our first time driving a hybrid version, and it is a pre-production model, we were disappointed with it.
Under normal driving, this does not offer any advantage over a base-engined car. It is louder, takes more time to hunt for gears, and is generally less fluent in action.
During the test track, the car didn’t look any more economical and the brake pedal felt less to boot. Which makes it nearly impossible at the moment to justify the $ 4,150 extra cost of choosing a hybrid over the 2.3-liter four.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine in Platinum is much easier to sell. Felt it’s perfect for powering Explorer with confidence, reliability, and decency, it’s really the engine for choosing whether your budget can achieve it. This gives the whole package an easier and more luxurious feel.
Likewise, the 400bhp ST model, unlike the Edge ST, is a sports SUV that’s well sorted.
While it lacks the outright fierceness of some of the competition, it still moves on the road and around whatever it is you show with good style, speed, and level of control.
As with vehicles bearing the ST badge. The head-to-head match with the Dodge Durango SRT will be an interesting one.
Away from the drivetrains and chassis, the optional active safety pack performs well, only making itself known when and when it’s needed.
