2023 Ford Explorer is an icon of Ford’s SUV lineup, carrying three family rows since 1990. Ford introduced the current sixth-generation Explorer for the 2020 model year, built on the same rear-drive-based platform as the Lincoln Aviator.

We don’t expect a major powertrain change.
We rate the Explorer as a midpack player in the three-row SUV segment. When we evaluated the 2020 SUV of the Year, we appreciated the new handling prowess provided by Ford’s switch to an RWD-based platform (especially in the 400-hp Explorer ST) and praised the hybrid for returning strong fuel economy figures with a slight penalty in towing capacity or performance.
That said, the interior of the pre-2023 model is disappointing, especially considering the high price of the Explorer.
The quality of the material and the quality of manufacture are clearly less than not only its counterparts but also its predecessors. Fuel economy, technology, and design are all substandard for this segment; there are other three-row SUVs that will serve you better.
We hope to see if the Ford Explorer 2023 will address any of these issues.

2023 Ford Explorer Review
The 2023 Ford Explorer is one of the most popular 3-row midsize SUVs thanks to its wide choice of engines as well as hybrids and versatility that comes with room for up to seven people.
The New 2023 Ford Explorer delivers several minor updates and major additions to the unit in continuing its gradual evolution with a mid-cycle update to the exterior design of the Expedition SUV.

2023 Ford Explorer Facelift
Ford Explorer Facelift is among the recently released American and Chinese sophistication. The midsize SUV is branded as an all-new model with the look of the front grille having been made much wider and sporting a heavy dose of chrome while flanked by completely redesigned LED headlights.
Fitted with a side profile revealing 21-inch alloy wheels with a turbine fan design and there are more changes at the rear where the wider taillights take after the smaller Equator also sold in China.
The prominent “Explorer” lettering on the tailgate replaces the Ford badge once with the Blue Oval now sitting slightly lower between the taillights joined by the chrome slats which are thinner but wider than before.
The 2023 Ford Explorer Facelift has so far undergone the most notable change with the inside of the dashboard accommodating the giant 27-inch touchscreen that we also saw on the Ford Evos sold in China.
With this large screen, it has swallowed up most of the conventional buttons while the central air vent has been moved lower to make room for the XXL screen that stretches across the passenger side of the dashboard.
2023 Ford Explorer China SUV
“America sophistication meets Chinese sophistication” is Ford’s way of describing the recently launched 2023 Explorer for the People’s Republic.

The order book in the domestic SUV market will open on August 11, with production programmed to begin on November 7.
The pure electric Explorer is still happening, but its original mid-2023 launch date has been pushed back to December 2024 when production reportedly started. It’s the same story as the more luxurious Lincoln Aviator EV, with both tied to a custom EV architecture.
As it stands, it’s unclear where the two zero-emission SUVs will be assembled, but it’s unlikely in Chicago or Cuautitlan.
2023 Ford Explorer: Next Gen Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is one of the longest SUVs on the road. It debuted more than 30 years ago and began an American love affair with a sports vehicle that has survived to this day. Our editors have praised the current generation Explorer for its powerful engine, spacious cargo space, and standard safety features.
However, substandard interior materials often do not match their price tag, which can fit into the territory of luxury SUVs at a higher trim level.
While we found the Explorer’s aspect interesting, the number of midsize SUVs has grown significantly since its debut SUV and is no longer the class leader it once was. Kia Telluride and its corporate cousin, the Hyundai Palisade, have taken the top spot for our recommendations in recent years.
Both are more comfortable and feel more premium inside than the Explorer. Similarly, the Honda Pilot and Volkswagen Atlas are worth considering as they both offer a comfortable ride and plenty of utility.
The Explorer is currently redesigned in 2020, so it’s too early for another complete overhaul in 2023. Nonetheless, we’ve seen some reports indicating that the Ford 2023 Explorer will get an updated style, so that could be a possibility.
A larger center touch screen with improved features and graphics can also be added. Ford was even able to address our complaints about the quality of the interior materials of the time.
We wouldn’t be surprised if Ford also added more standard features, scrambling items that were previously in the higher trim to the lower ones. We’ll know more later in the year when an official announcement is expected to be made.

Is There an Electric Ford Explorer?
The short answer? This is in the works. Ford is developing a new electrical architecture to support future electrical versions of the Explorer, Bronco, Ranger, and Lincoln Aviator. According to a recent report from Automotive News, production is not scheduled until December 2024.

The Explorer is just as safe as the family SUV you’d expect. Not only did it get a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, but the Ford family carrier was also named the Top Safety Pick+ 2021 by IIHS.
Ford also includes some Co-Pilot360 driver assistance features. Every Explorer has automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic alerts, lane departure alerts, and automatic remote lights as standard equipment.

Cargo Hold and Interior Space

Timberline trims aim for off-road capable SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner. It comes standard with a 4WD and Terrain Management system with Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Trail, Slippery, and Deep Snow/Sand modes.
Building on the contents of the XLT 202A High Pack, Timberline added unique interior colors and seat inserts, heated rear seats, and Co-Pilot360 Assist+ with a 360-degree camera.

Unlike Explorer Limited and its twin, the Explorer Platinum Hybrid is cheaper than the gas-powered version. That’s because the standard engine in the Platinum is the high-output 3.0-liter from the King Ranch and ST.
Built from the Limited 301A package, the Platinum adds 21-inch alloy wheels, painted front and rear skid plate elements, illuminated front door sill plates, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and leather seat inserts in a diamond pattern. You also get adaptive headlights that turn toward the steering wheel.

The interior is very spacious, but the comfort level changes from front to back. There is plenty of room in the first and second-row seats, but the second row is less flexible than the first row. The third-row seats are a decent size. In comparison, the Hyundai Palisade outperforms the others with its largest cabin.
The Explorer can seat only 7 people, but the cabin has the most room for a third row in the segment. The 18.2 cubic feet lift capacity is decent and quickly rises to 83.9 cubic feet when you fold the second and third-row seats.
