New 2027 Ford Edge EREV Platform Overview

2027 Ford Edge: More than five years ago, Ford and the Canadian union Unifor reached a new agreement regarding operations at the Oakville assembly plant—which ultimately marked the end of Ford Edge production. Production of the crossover for the US market continues until the 2024 model year is completed, but when the last unit rolls off the assembly line, it’s all over.

There are no plans to revive this model, although some online rumors suggest that it will return to the market but at least the rumors about the 2027 Ford Edge are still under control.

For example, a recent Google search for “2027 Ford Edge” yielded accurate results right at the top of the page, thanks to the search engine’s AI assistant, Gemini. The results began with a statement confirming that the Edge would be discontinued after the 2024 model year, with production ending in April 2024.

The report also detailed the reason, stating that the Oakville assembly plant was no longer able to produce the crossover due to ongoing repairs.

However, there’s one thing that’s not true: Gemini’s claims that Oakville was being reconfigured for electric vehicle production were once true. Due to lackluster demand for electric vehicles, Ford reconsidered the plan and instead shifted its focus to Ford Super Duty production, which will now be handled at the facility.

At least Gemini acknowledges that the 2027 Ford Edge won’t happen, and even suggests other suitable models for someone looking for a similarly sized vehicle.

These include the Ford Bronco Sport or Ford Explorer, both of which will continue to be offered for a while.

Additionally, Gemini points out that the Ford Edge model technically still exists but is only offered in China. The third-generation Ford Edge L was launched for the 2023 model year, but it won’t be coming to the US anytime soon.

2027 Ford Edge Overview

On the Ford Edge webpage it’s been turned into a sort of temporary monument, and the eulogy posted by FoMoCo invites you to “Open yourself up to new adventures while retaining the features, performance, and style you love in the Edge.” Well, maybe if the Ford Edge ST were sharper or less expensive, the Edge name would still be there.

If Ford intends to leave this gap in its SUV lineup, that might be the end of the story. After all, Ford still makes the Expedition, Explorer, Mustang Mach-E, Bronco, and Bronco Sport (which is essentially an Escape, for the most part). So, with all these options, is there really a place for the Edge? There are plenty of crossovers here. And a lot of crossovers.

A replacement was supposed to be coming soon, but months after the announcement of the end of Edge production, there’s still no news. Ford announced plans to invest $1.8 billion in its Oakville Assembly Complex in Canada by 2023 (which previously assembled the Edge) to begin production of the three-row EV crossover in 2025.

In April 2024, Ford announced a delay in the EV update until 2027. Then, in May 2025, Ford reconfigured the plant again, investing $2.3 billion in the same plant to produce the Ford F-250 Super Duty instead. Unless Ford plans to stuff the Edge like a goose being prepared for foie gras, the large and heavy Super Duty isn’t a direct replacement for the midsize crossover.

Ford clearly has plenty of SUVs available right now, so there’s no pressing need to replace the Edge. And, if Ford’s EV woes continue as they’ve been, the new Edge certainly won’t be electric. The F-150 Lightning’s short towing range in real-world use and the Mustang Mach-E GT’s limited performance on a quarter-mile track aren’t helping sales.

In fact, Ford has completely discontinued production of the pure EV F-150 Lightning (the Lightning will return with a small gasoline engine as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV).

In January 2023, when Ford planned to convert its Edge plant to a three-row electric vehicle facility, the average price of an electric vehicle was $62,529. By April 2024, when Ford announced that the Oakville plant would no longer produce an electric version of the Edge, the average cost of an electric vehicle had shrunk to $49,258, a significant decrease from previous years, but still insufficient to achieve viable profitability.

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) conducted an analysis of electric vehicle profitability in April 2024 and determined how much losses conventional automakers would incur on electric vehicles. The analysis showed that if a manufacturer sold an electric vehicle for $50,000, they would lose approximately $6,000 on that vehicle.

So, it’s no surprise that Ford is shifting to producing large pickup trucks at a plant previously dedicated to electric vehicles. This is especially true now, as electric vehicle prices continue to rise as government incentives are phased out.

That makes Ford CFO John Lawler’s August 2024 statement to the BBC less surprising, in which the executive said Ford’s electric vehicle plans were being scaled back due to “pricing and margin pressures.”

So Ford decided to focus on what was already selling: internal combustion engine trucks. The F-Series trucks alone generated $41.5 billion in revenue for Ford in 2022, surpassing Starbucks, Netflix, and Visa.

2027 Ford Edge: Platform EV Universal

With the electric vehicle (EV) market slowing, is it likely that Ford will launch an Edge replacement with an internal combustion engine or a hybrid? Probably not. Ford announced in August that it was spending $5 billion on the “Ford Universal EV Platform” and the “Ford Universal EV Production System.”

2027 Ford Edge

Ford’s Louisville plant is preparing for a vehicle launch in 2027, and BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan will begin producing Ford’s new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells. The vehicle launching in 2027? Not an Edge replacement.

According to Ford, the first vehicle to use the platform will be a lightweight, midsize, four-door EV pickup truck that will start around $30,000 and accelerate as quickly as the Mustang EcoBoost. After the pickup, the universal platform could form the basis for a similarly sized crossover to fill the Edge’s void, though no specifics have been announced yet.

Perhaps there’s another Edge candidate? There’s the European-only Ford Explorer EV, which sounds a lot like the originally planned Edge replacement with three rows of seating and electric power. The problem is, despite being among the top 25 best-selling EVs in Europe, sales have been weak enough that Ford is cutting about 1,000 jobs at its Cologne, Germany, plant where the Explorer EV is built.

Could Ford replace the Edge with another Edge? Yes, Ford sells the “Edge L” in China. It’s a three-row SUV with an 8-inch longer wheelbase than the old Edge. The hybrid version produces 271 hp and gets 37 mpg fuel economy. Plus, it has excellent reliability ratings.

All this is happening while there is absolutely no official word on an Edge replacement for the American market, although Edge fans are very enthusiastic that this model will still come with a new style and feel that is better than before.

Verdict

The 2027 Ford Edge story ends before it even begins. Ford has officially closed the chapter on the Edge in the U.S., shifting focus toward high-demand trucks and carefully recalibrating its EV strategy. Despite ongoing rumors, there’s no solid plan to bring it back—at least not in its old form. Instead, Ford leans on a strong SUV lineup like the Explorer and Bronco, while quietly exploring future platforms that might fill the gap one day.

For now, the Edge lives on only in select global markets, and its absence in the U.S. marks a clear shift in priorities.
