2021 Ford Explorer Reviews
What does the 2020 ford explorer look like, Coming with a full redesign last year, the Ford Explorer is back for 2021 with only minor changes?
Like the previous model, this is a three-line midsize SUV perfectly suited for a variety of tasks. The sixth-generation Explorer is best known for featuring a rear-wheel-drive layout, but its body retains its unibody construction.
The shift back to traditional rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive is optional) makes sense on many levels.
Handling and overall balance improve dramatically when you stop trying to drive and power the vehicle from the same end. Crane stability and powertrain selection are also advantageous.
Indeed, the Explorer is one of the best choices in the mid-range three-line SUV for towing. As for power, there’s a standard 300 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder or a 400 hp turbocharged V6 available.
While the Ford Explorer is fun to drive and has large cargo space, it is kept in check with its relatively expensive stickers and an interior that doesn’t live up to the standards set by its price.
Check out our in-depth Explorer Expert Rankings to learn more.
- Powerful engine for fast acceleration
- Rear-wheel drive platform improves handling and towing
- Spacious cargo area
- The new Sport Appearance package is available on the XLT trim
- Minor changes to standard and optional feature availability
- Part of the sixth generation of Explorer introduced for 2020
The basic Explorer is generously chosen, but we recommend upgrading the XLT trim for its nicer interior and added comfort features.
If the Limited trim hadn’t experienced such a huge price jump, it would have earned our recommendation for its added safety and luxury features.
The Ford Explorer 2021 is a mid-size three-row SUV with seating for seven people (six if you choose the second-row captain’s seat). The Explorer is available in basic trim levels, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum.
Most models receive a four-cylinder engine, while the top trim gets a more powerful V6. The 10-speed automatic is the only transmission offered and drives the rear wheels.
All-wheel drive is available as an option (standard on Platinum). There is also a hybrid variant discussed in a separate review.
Even in the initial trim levels, Explorer comes with many standard features which include:
- 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (300 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque)
- Power liftgate
- Tri-zone automatic climate control
- Power adjustable driver seat
- 35/30/35-split second-row stool
- Third-row seats fold 50/50
- 8-inch touch screen
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
- Wi-Fi hotspot in the vehicle
- Remote monitoring and control via a smartphone application
Each Explorer is also equipped with the following advanced security features:
- Frontal collision mitigation (warns you of impending collisions and applies brakes in certain scenarios)
- Blindspot monitor with rear traffic alerts (alerts you if the vehicle is in your blind spot during lane changes or while reverse)
- Lane guard assistance (directs the vehicle back into its course if it starts hovering over the lane marker)
- Trailer shake control (adjusts vehicle brakes to help control the movement of the trailer if the trailer starts rocking)
XLT received interior material repairs and several comfort items which include:
- Roof rails
- Keyless entry / ignition and exterior keypad
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel
- Heated front seat
- Power adjustable driver seat
- Second-row captain’s seat
- Second-line USB port
The midrange Limited dresses the interior with higher-quality trim pieces. It also adds:
- Interior ambient lighting
- Leather upholstery
- Heated steering wheel
- Ventilated front seats
- Second-row seats that can be folded and heated
- Second-row glasses
- Wireless charging pad
- Navigation system with voice control
- Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker audio system
Additional security features include:
- All-around camera system (gives you an up and down view of the vehicle and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
- Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between vehicle and car in front)
- Centering system (makes minor steering corrections to help the vehicle stay centered on its course)
The ST is a sporty Explorer. This eliminates roof rails, adds unique stylistic maintenance, and further advantages:
- 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine (400 hp, 415 lb-ft)
- Adjustable suspension for sports
- Paddle shifters
- Front seat memory function
- Digital instrument panel
- Sport front seat
- Automatic parking system (directs into the parking lot with minimal driver intervention)
- Automatic braking in reverse
Top-of-the-line Platinum trim gets a very luxurious interior. It has a turbocharged V6 but forgets the ST’s sporty touch. It adds:
- Adaptive headlights (turn when you turn the wheel for better lighting around corners)
- Class 3 Trailer Crane Package
- Digital gauge cluster display
- The leather upholstery is extended
Many features are available to support trim as an option. Other add-ons depend on the trim level and include:
- Sunroof
- Liftgate hands-free
- Improved brakes (ST trim only)
- Foldable third-row seats
- Massaging the front seat
- Larger 10.1-inch touch screen
- Premium 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system
- Dual screen rear entertainment system
2021 Ford Explorer Seating Capacity 6
The explorer can seat seven people, or six if you choose the second-row captain’s seat. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, and the driver enjoys good forward visibility.
However, the second and third-row seats are not as accommodating as some other midsize SUVs, and they lack adequate support.

Continuing to impress after warm reception, the new Telluride brings a towing upgrade system, a new appearance package, and several technology updates through 2021.
Another popular SUV, The 2021 Ford Explorer, is the second generation of a completely revamped model. This new year model also offers updated exterior features and package options.
So, what are the sizes of these two SUVs when looking at the specifications? Here’s what you need to know.
Available Trim Levels
There are four trim levels available for Telluride, starting with the basic LX trim. This trim provides the basics you want in an SUV: space, capability, and safety.
The S, EX, and SX top trims offer additional features that focus on various aspects of performance and style. The S trim is great if you want comfort features like a sunroof and heated front seats.
If you want a fancier interior, the EX trim includes ventilated leather upholstery. If you’re looking for the best in features and a sporty look, you’ll love the SX option.
Ford Explorer offers five trim levels. If you opt for the basic Explorer trim, you’ll get some great features for the base trim, such as chrome exterior accents and auto high beam.
XLT and Limited trim add some interesting styling enhancements as well as an optional hybrid powertrain. If you’re looking for an SUV that’s more performance-focused, the Explorer ST offers an extra kick with a more powerful engine than the standard option.
Lastly, the Platinum trim offers several luxurious interior features as well as the same engine as the ST.
Standard features
Standard features are becoming more and more impressive as car manufacturers keep up with developments in technology and design. Telluride 2021 definitely follows: Each trim level features heated side mirrors with integrated LED turn signal indicators, LED daytime running lights, paint-finished wheels, 8-inch touchscreen, smart cruise control, eight-seater seating, and hands-free calling capability.
Kia’s UVO Link is also a standard feature for Telluride 2021, offering convenient smartphone connectivity and capabilities via the app. You can connect to Telluride and enjoy remote features such as vehicle location services, remote start, remote door lock and unlock, and maintenance information.
Ford Explorer also provides several standard features such as tri-zone electronic climate control, remote start, lane guard assistance, Wi-Fi hotspot, LED taillights, seating for seven people, and high beam automatic. Ford also provides smartphone connectivity via FordPass Connect, which offers the same remote features as Kia’s UVO service.
Machine Specifications
The standard engine for the new Telluride is the 3.8-liter Lambda V-6 with direct fuel injection and an electronically controlled eight-speed automatic transmission.
This engine has a power of up to 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The Sportmatic shifter provides a more exciting boost than you might expect from a full-size SUV.
You can choose between four different driving modes: Comfort, Smart, Sport, and Eco.
The 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine comes with Ford Explorer base trim, offering up to 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The performance-focused ST trim is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.
The hybrid option is a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V-6 engine paired with a lithium-ion battery. Every Explorer engine option comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift capability.
Ability
Each Telluride model is equipped with underbody slip plates to protect the SUV’s critical parts, even when over difficult terrain.
An active all-wheel-drive system is available with an all-wheel-drive lock and snow mode providing ideal handling and traction in adverse driving conditions.
If equipped properly, the Kia Telluride can draw up to 5,000 pounds.
Ford’s available all-terrain four-wheel drive management system provides seven different drive modes: normal, slippery, sport, trail, tow/haul, eco, and deep-snow / sand.
This lets you easily select the skills you like best for the road ahead. With the included crane packages available, the Explorer can tow up to £ 5,600.
Inside Car
When you select standard second and third-row bench seats, you will have seats of up to eight people at your Telluride.
The second-row captain’s seat is available with top trim but counts backward to seven seats. With the second and third-row seats folded, you’ll have 87 cubic feet of cargo space.
The Ford Explorer does not offer second-row seats, so it can only accommodate up to seven people. If you fold the second and third rows, you will end up with 87.8 cubic feet of space.
Technology
An 8-inch touch screen and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the basic Telluride trim. The top trim features a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, and a wireless charging pad.
The Ford Explorer comes with the Ford SYNC 3 infotainment system which also uses Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone integration. A tablet-sized touch screen with voice-activated navigation and pinch-to-zoom capability is available in the top trim.
Security
Several standard safety features, such as front collision avoidance with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane guard assistance with lane alerts, rear traffic warning, smart cruise control, and driver attention alerts, provide Kia Driver Telluride with peace of mind.
The Ford Explorer offers many of the same safety features, but features like smart cruise control are only available with the top trim level.
The Kia Telluride is a spacious, capable, comfortable, and good-looking SUV that has all the amenities you want inside and out.

2021 Ford Explorer Reliability
Nothing is more important than a vehicle than reliability. Sure, excellent fuel economy and a spacious cabin are great, but having a car with durability, in the end, beats everything.
That’s why it’s so surprising that people continue to buy the Ford Explorer 2021, despite the problems of its predecessor being widely reported.
Over the years, Ford has made the Explorer the key to its brand. However, Consumer Reports data suggests that car buyers may not want to use this popular model.
The publication gave the SUV a predicted reliability score of just 1% and an overall vehicle rating of 42/100.
The Ford Explorer has long been a household name. But what was once a touted mid-range SUV has met an unfortunate turn on the road.
And from the looks of it, it’s a curve that this vehicle can’t handle very well. What exactly is going on with the 2021 Ford Explorer, and is it actually one of the least reliable SUVs of 2021?
The Explorer is nothing but a headache for the American manufacturer this year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalled the 2020 Ford Explorer 10 times in the past year.
But like everything, the new dawn brings a new day. Even though the 2020 Ford Explorer is an objective failure, this doesn’t automatically spell disaster for the 2021 model.
Some may disagree, siding that the issues plaguing the previous year’s model should affect how buyers view the new Ford Explorer 2021. Experts must have many reasons to be worried.
Consumer Reports takes its assessments very seriously. So to publish any vehicle with such a low score is undoubtedly worrying. That’s especially true considering how Consumer Report likes most Ford SUVs over Chevy models.
Let’s take a look at previous model issues to determine if you should still consider purchasing this problematic three-line SUV.
Past troubles may be a sign of troubles to come Recalls can vary in severity and do not affect all models in the vehicle lineup.
Some of the Explorer 2020 draws weren’t too severe, such as those for the distorted/inoperable rearview camera.
However, another issue raised eyebrows and could deter some buyers from buying a 2020 or 2021 Ford Explorer at all.
For example, NHTSA recalled the 2020 Explorer in August for the possibility of loose side airbags on the back of the seat.
Other significant drawbacks include sagging motor mounts, fuel tank intake valve that is not welded properly, possible driveshaft fracture, and more.
Dealers will fix most of these problems before the buyer buys the new Ford Explorer 2021. However, it’s safe to assume that the many problems in the 2020 model tarnished the reputation of the nameplate.
This is why buyers are still considering buying the Ford Explorer 2021
The recall undoubtedly frustrated the owner. These problems take time to fix and can make the owner feel uncomfortable until the problem is resolved. However, the recall doesn’t tell the whole story about the true reliability of the vehicle.
Even with all the problems it has, the JD Power still gives the 2020 Ford Explorer a 74/100 quality and reliability score. The organization has not yet assessed the 2021 model.
There’s no denying that the Explorer is an interesting vehicle. Has a sharp and sturdy design that makes headaches. Plus, Ford offers an impressive range of powertrain options that are sure to grab the attention of any gearhead. After all, Consumer Reports gave the Explorer a positive 78/100 score in its running tests.
For example, the Ford Explorer ST 2021 features a twin-turbo V6 engine producing 400 hp, making it one of the sportier options in the mid-range SUV.
Buying a three-line SUV is a big investment, and you shouldn’t choose a model based solely on looks or features. If you’re risk-averse, don’t worry. There are many more reliable alternatives to the 2021 Ford Explorer.
Models like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade didn’t deliver as much punch as the Explorer ST. But these vehicles have a higher predicted reliability rating and come with a longer warranty if something goes wrong.
2021 Ford Explorer Timberline
In October of last year, Ford Authority reported that the Ford Explorer would get King Ranch and Timberline trim levels for the 2021 model year.
Since then, we’ve spied Explorer Timberline prototypes testing not just once or twice, but three times, and we’ve also Seen the King Ranch on one occasion so far.
But in addition to its unique styling features, we noticed something particularly interesting about the Timberline, a new logo, designed to resemble the outline of a mountain range, which is present on the front bumper.
While the King Ranch trim level has been around for a while on Ford F-Series pickups, including the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty, Timberline is brand new to the automaker.
It will mean a more off-road version of the Ford Explorer, as we’ve previously reported, and the Timberline branding is very similar to Subaru’s Wilderness Edition Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek that are in the works.
These light-duty off-road vehicles, which also include the Ford Bronco Sport and the future Ford Fusion Active, are designed to appeal to people who enjoy the great outdoors and feature several enhancements that make them capable of light off-road activities.
To medium-sized, while taking their owners and their gear to remote destinations to do things like fishing, camping, biking, kayaking, or canoeing.
Like Ford’s European Active models, which have expanded enormously due to growing demand in recent years, Timberline will target the same type of customer.
That’s precisely why the Explorer Timberline prototype carries a new logo that looks like a mountain range, as it is easily identifiable as a vehicle that is capable of doing much more than transporting food and children to soccer practice.
In addition to the new logo, the Timberline Explorer features a unique grille design with a single bar spanning the width of the grille, an orange stripe on the front bumper, matching orange tow hooks, and a new fog light design.
The car uses a set of 18-inch black wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires, with dual exhausts hidden under the rear to increase ground clearance.
It’s also possible that the Timberline travels by an adjustable air suspension, as we recently speculated.
We expect the Timberline Explorer to launch soon for the 2021 model year as a rugged version of Ford’s old crossover, which is basically an off-road-focused version of the Explorer ST.
Like all other Explorer variants, the Timberline Explorer will be produced at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen several 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline prototypes being tested not once, but twice. And now we’ve found another Timberline prototype hanging around, this time in Oxford White paint.
The lighter color gives us a better view of the orange stripe across the Timberline bumper, as well as the matching orange tow hook, and provides a nice contrast to the dark trim and crossed wheels.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline also features a unique grille design with a single stem that extends the width of the grille.
Also missing is the “Explorer” script that normally runs under the hood, while the fog lamps have a completely new design.
Instead of the slim rectangular unit found on the regular Explorer, the Timberline has a sturdier square fog light. The lower rack also features a different design aimed at increasing the approach angle of the crossing.
On the side, the Timberline sports a set of 18-inch black alloy wheels that resemble those available on the Ford Bronco Sport Badlands, clad in large Bridgestone Dueler off-road tires. The previous prototype had a C-pillar insignia, but this one did not.
While the 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline doesn’t seem to ride much higher than the rest of the Ford Explorer models, the new off-road focused variant may use adjustable air suspension, as we recently speculated.
The Timberline rear bumper has also been overhauled, presumably to increase the Timberline’s departure angle, and the dual exhaust has been hidden for the same reason.
Perhaps most interestingly, the Timberline sports a “4WD” badge on the rear tailgate, although the Explorer comes in an all-wheel-drive configuration. Finally, while other prototypes had a Timberline badge on the elevator doors, this one did not.
FoMoCo applied for the trademark “Timberline” on January 11, 2018, for the categories of motorized goods and services,
2021 Ford Explorer Colors
2021 ford explorer reliability, The sixth-gen Ford Explorer getting here for 2020 is neither. It might look like a small progression from its precursor, but a lot is going on beneath that makes this makeover more significant than it appears.
Its new unibody platform with a longitudinally-mounted engine and conventional rear-wheel drive simulates the format located in several high-end SUVs, noting the third significant modification to the Explorer’s building after it went from being a body-on-frame,
Truck-based 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline SUV for its very first four generations to being a transverse-engined crossover for its fifth.
It was about time. The previous-gen Explorer aged less than beautifully over a lifetime extending from 2011 to 2019, and its ancient Volvo-derived design– with beginnings dating to before the Millenium– was greatly to blame.
Those bones, which are fossils by auto criteria, have actually finally paved the way to this new sixth-generation model’s rear-wheel-drive-based (four-wheel drive is optional) format, which brings a vast array of renovations.
2021 Ford Explorer Limited
on Limited, ST, and Platinum models. The Sport Appearance Package is now available in XLT trim and includes 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels covered in Carbonized Gray paint.
In addition to the upgraded wheels, this package also features a mesh grille with charred gray accents as well as a unique underbody cladding, dual exhaust outlets, light slate interior seats, dummy skid plates, and more.
The new cargo carrier is optional on XLT, Limited, and ST models; The Platinum finish accepts this feature as standard.
Other than that, we think the standard features desired in the Limited version will suffice.
These include a 12-speaker B&O audio system, 20-inch wheels, heated adjustable power steering wheel, leather upholstery, a power-folding third row, and improved driver assistance such as adaptive cruise control.
The Trim Base, XLT, and Limited come with a 300-hp 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and that motivates the Explorer with authority.
Leading drivers among us will prefer the Platinum model, with a 365-hp 3.0-liter Biturbo V-6 engine, or the Explorer ST sports car, which uses the 400-hp version of the same engine.
2021 Ford Explorer ST Reviews
- Driving smoothly and in control, cargo-friendly interior design, comfortable front seats.
- The lowest Third-row space is narrow, the interior part of the plastic, the most desired model is expensive.
- The Verdict The Explorer is a complete three-line SUV with a few compromises, but overall it’s a viable option in a busy segment.
The 2020 model year Explorer is the sixth generation of the multi-story SUV. Without wanting to break the cuteness, it’s also the best the Ford Explorer has ever made.
Together with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, it helped kickstart the SUV frenzy in 1991, when it replaced the Bronco II.
It sold more than 400,000 units a year at its peak in 1994 when the US dumped wagons and sedans in support of high-end lifestyle trucks.
As competition from all sides has increased, the heady numbers have decreased substantially, but still, more than 250,000 are sold each year, including more than 30,000 police interceptors.
So, it’s still one of the most important and profitable vehicles in the Ford lineup. But it’s not one of the best.
Based on the older version of the Volvo S80 front-wheel-drive platform, the performance and interior quickly fall below standard.
This sixth-generation vehicle strives to address all of these shortcomings and add a whole new level of comfort, flexibility, and performance.
At the heart of this is an all-new rear-drive unibody platform that uses the engine longitudinally. One of the first features using the Modular Hybrid transmission driveline.
This simple-sounding but undoubtedly very complicated setup combines a 44bhp electric motor between the 335bhp V6 gas-powered engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Its mission is more to increase performance, add lower-end torque, and throttle response than to aid savings. Expect to see its version in the upcoming Bronco and the F-150 hybrid pick-up too, soon.
Other engines in the range include a 300bhp in-line four, plus two versions of the 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6. 365bhp units are installed in the Platinum variant. And the full-house 400bhp version in Explorer ST.
This is the second time Ford has used the sacred ST tag on an SUV. We hope it gets a lot better than the last time the company used it to spice up the end-of-life Edge.
Despite the all-new platform, the Explorer 2020 design is still instantly recognizable, with its forward-facing C-pillar and the trademark trapezoidal Ford company grille.
The interior has been completely redesigned with varying degrees of success depending on which chair you occupy.
Drifting
Immediately, the new Explorer steers, brakes, and accelerates much better than the model it replaces. Steering is more pronounced, body roll is better checked and as a result, you feel much more confident when you throw.
Off-road, the Explorer is more than adequate to handle even wild climbs, rocks, water, and mud. These observations apply to all models tested.
The real difference lies in the drive path. While this is our first time driving a hybrid version, and it is a pre-production model, we were disappointed with it.
Under normal driving, this does not offer any advantage over a base-engined car. It is louder, takes more time to hunt for gears, and is generally less fluent in action.
During the test track, the car didn’t look any more economical and the brake pedal felt less to boot. Which makes it nearly impossible at the moment to justify the $ 4,150 extra cost of choosing a hybrid over the 2.3-liter four.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine in Platinum is much easier to sell. Felt it’s perfect for powering Explorer with confidence, reliability, and decency, it’s really the engine for choosing whether your budget can achieve it. This gives the whole package an easier and more luxurious feel.
Likewise, the 400bhp ST model, unlike the Edge ST, is a sports SUV that’s well sorted.
While it lacks the outright fierceness of some of the competition, it still moves on the road and around whatever it is you show with good style, speed, and level of control.
As with vehicles bearing the ST badge. The head-to-head match with the Dodge Durango SRT will be an interesting one.
Away from the drivetrains and chassis, the optional active safety pack performs well, only making itself known when and when it’s needed.
Likewise, road and wind noise are well suppressed across all models, which will make longer trips less taxable.
Interior
Ford has used the ‘iPad nailed to the dashboard’ look first popularized by Mercedes Benz for the new Explorer. The screen size grows the further you reach.
Despite its fine appearance, the software reacts slowly at times, turn navigation is lost, and input is rejected. Again, Ford says this is a pre-production issue and will be sorted out before the final production car goes live.
There are no problems with any of the analog controls, which will probably use more than the screen. It’s not the most attractive dashboard on the market but it has functionality and a clean look that everyday users will love.
The seats are much better than the previous model, offering more support and better vision. There’s also a sense of space on the two front rows, and upgraded materials throughout.
But the third row isn’t much improved – it’s still cramped and offers little comfort. Ford’s competitors are doing a better job here.
There is more absolute cargo space than in the gen five when all the seats are folded. However, it diminishes when all three rows of seats are used.
2021 Ford Explorer Redesign
With 2019 being an actually big year for three-row mid-size SUVs, 2021 Ford Explorer Platinum Colors had to give the upgraded 2020 Explorer big adjustments to stay on top of a tightly loaded class including two brand-new South Oriental participants:
The Kia Telluride, which is amazing, as well as the Hyundai Palisade, which I’ll be examining soon. As well as the huge adjustments it got,
With the 2020 Explorer obtaining a complete redesign that consists of a brand-new rear-wheel-drive system (changing its front-drive-based framework), plus upgraded designing as well as two new trim degrees.
Those brand-new trims are the Explorer Crossbreed and performance-focused 400-horsepower Explorer ST, which I examined alongside the top Explorer Platinum trim around Portland, Ore.
(Per our values policy, Cars.com spends for its very own accommodations as well as plane tickets at such automaker-sponsored occasions.)
I’ll have much more on the ST later this week, but for now, I’ll focus on the gas and also hybrid variations.
I drove the Explorer Hybrid from Rose city all the way back down the West Coast to Los Angeles, and also along the way obtained really acquainted with it, locating a few points that troubled me– some that disappeared and also some that remained.
2021 Ford Explorer Colors (Interior)
Some of the Explorer’s static enhancements schedule much less to its format adjustment than to its brand-new system, which isn’t a hack job like its predecessor’s.
Because the old version’s platform had been substantially stretched to create such a large SUV, its inside was unusually proportioned.
Wide side sills, as well as a high cowl, produced a bathtub-like feeling in the front seats, as well as there had not been as much able to be used freight area inside as its large impact recommended.
The brand-new vehicle’s seating setting is much more natural, and outside vision is enhanced. The freight area is efficiently clean compared with the old Explorer,
As the brand-new vehicle has more freight volume with all seats folded up but fewer cubic feet behind the second as well as third rows when they’re in use.
Still, much of the Explorer’s front-wheel-drive-based rivals are packaged better, and Ford’s third-row seat is particularly unsatisfactory.
Although coming back there is much easier than before thanks to a button that quickly tumbles the second-row seats (used either as a three-place bench or specific captain’s chairs), the back row’s bottom padding is reduced, and also unsupportive.
This trouble, in which Explorers’ knees are pushed into their chests, afflicts several third-row seats, yet competitors from Subaru, Volkswagen, as well as Chevrolet, give passengers extra room to uncurl from the fetal-tuck position.

We located the first two rows to be more positive than before. Also in reduced trim levels, the door panels and dashboard use primarily soft-touch materials, and also every little thing fits together all right.
The dashboard does not have a layout style, yet we agree to offer it a pass because it’s so useful as well as easy to use. The climate-control buttons are rationally set out, the radio can be regulated by actual adjusting and also quantity knobs,
And also the main touchscreen screen looks crisp and also has efficient menus. A trendy yet slightly newfangled up and down oriented 10.1-inch touchscreen additionally is an option.
2021 Ford Explorer Colors (Exterior)
There’s a whole lot that’s new for the all-new 2021 Ford Explorer lineup right here at Brandon Ford in Tampa Fl, FL– from its updated as well as upgraded powertrain choices and its pair of brand new trim levels to its boosted as well as enhanced indoor and also features.

After last year’s full redesign, explorer 2021 saw only minor changes to 2021, including making the XLT heated seat and steering standard optional and making the XLT upholstery Sports View package available.
2021 Ford Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Package
In February, we reported that the 2021 Ford Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Pack is back for the new model year.
Designed to appeal to young buyers, the package consists of several unique interior and exterior features and is a strong seller in previous Ford Explorer models.
The only question that needs to be answered with this new/old plan is how much it will cost, and now we know that too.
Ford Official has learned that the 2021 Ford Explorer XLT Sport Appearance Pack will retail for $ 1,595. And since the 2021 Explorer gets discounts on all hardware levels, buyers will get more for their money.
The rear-wheel-drive XLT carries a base MSRP of $ 34,000 for 2021, Ford’s destination and delivery costs are $ 1,245 less. Choosing an all-wheel-drive increase the price from $ 2,000 to $ 36,000.
The 2021 Explorer XLT Sport package adds the following features and equipment:
- Unique plus matching 20-inch Carbonized Gray wheels
- Cage
- Skid plate
- Hood script
- Dual chrome exhaust tips
Internal
- Two-tone ActiveX Light Slate chair with stitching accents
- Center console cover panel and door trim
- The addition of the XLT Sport Appearance Pack coincides with several other minor changes to Ford’s three-line crossover, including several new exterior colors and some improvements to the Explorer ST interior design. Additionally, recent spy photos show an off-road focus model – possibly an FX4 model – in action.
As Ford Authorities first reported, the Ford Explorer 2021 order bank opened on July 13, 2020.
Production began on September 21, 2020, at the Chicago Ford Assembly Factory, where the Explorer was built alongside the Lincoln Aviator.
The sixth-generation Ford Explorer is completely new from the ground up and uses the same Ford CD6 platform as the Aviator.

Made for the family, or best for the crowd – with an arsenal of gear, the Ford Explorer 2021 is a three-line SUV with room for growth.
It competes with many of the family’s dream machines including the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, and Chevy Traverse.
The Explorer gets a 6.8 TCC Rating. It’s on our honors list for new cars on sale, but only slightly off the TCC dean’s list. Small disadvantages in Explorer prevent it from climbing any higher.
With the Explorer, Ford offers a wide range of trims and powertrains to satisfy buyers – base, XLT, Limited, ST, and Platinum. Most Explorers will have an under-the-hood 2.3-liter turbo-4 engine producing 300 horsepower mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive will be provided on many Explorers.
Explorer Limited offers a hybrid version that uses a 3.3-liter V-6 engine coupled with an electric motor and a hybrid battery pack that produces 318 hp and can produce a combined output of up to 28 mpg, according to the EPA.
The Explorer Platinum and Explorer ST use a 3.0-liter turbo V-6 engine that produces 365 hp or 400 hp. They are mated with all-wheel drive only and are fast enough to become ipecac replacements at roundabouts.
The heated front seats are standard on the Explorer XLT now, and that’s the version we recommend for most buyers.
The XLT also offers a sporty exterior package with large wheels that might appeal to some (at the expense of a stiffer ride) and the sports adjoining Explorer ST can be fitted with 21-inch wheels that cover enormous high-performance brakes pads.
Three rows of seats are standard with space at the back only for children.
Each Explorer is equipped with automatic emergency braking, which improves its life history.
Each Explorer is also equipped with an 8.0-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, which enhances its travel resume.
2021 Ford Explorer Limited
The key features of the 2021 Explorer Limited have not changed effectively for the new model year after last year’s complete redesign.
This redesign provides a massive rear-wheel-drive crossover with an optional all-wheel drive. It also carries some new turbocharged engines and hybrids.
A new feature of the Explorer 2021 is the inclusion of the XLT Sport package. It adds 20-inch wheels in dark gray that reflect the grille, badge, and skid plate accents on the bumper.
Inside is a light gray interior with two-tone upholstery. The rest of the line has not changed.
We were impressed by the power and development of this new engine lineup, whether it’s a basic turbo four-cylinder, hybrid V6, or a seriously rushed dual V6 turbo engine.
Every Explorer is more passionate than ever and more exciting than most of the three-line rivals. In particular, the Explorer ST has a very impressive handling and the highest power of different models.
The first two rows are quite large and the third tolerable, no space was sacrificed by this new platform.
The interior is a bit plastic but accentuated by a large glossy look and some nice trims like Platinum-plated wood accents.
The Explorer lineup begins with XLT and Limited trim levels, both with a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline quad and 10-speed automatic transmissions, both delivering 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available as an option. Fuel economy of 24 mpg combined with RWD and 23 mpg with AWD. This machine is one of the strongest in its segment, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with sticking to the basic model, given the abundance of standard feature content (especially the entire anti-collision technologies package).
The latter also includes various other performance-enhancing mechanical enhancements and sportier styling.
Finally, the Explorer Hybrid, which is only available on a limited basis, pairs a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V6 with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Total power is 318 hp. Returns 28 mpg with RWD and 25 mpg with AWD.

2021 Ford Explorer Police
The all-new Ford Police Interceptor Utility makes its debut in 2020 alongside its civilian counterpart, the Ford Explorer.
At the time, it represented a new and exciting ship for law enforcement, offering more power and performance than ever before, coupled with many safety features, an excessive amount of interior space, and lots of new technology.
And now, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility 2021 will get a new exterior color option as well.
We are all too used to seeing black and white police cars, iconic features that have long represented law enforcement. But for 2021, the crime-fighting Ford SUV can also be found in Ford’s popular Carbonized Gray hue that is also available on the new 2021 Mach-E Mustang.
Perhaps not surprisingly, this particular color has proven to be a favorite of Mach-E buyers so far, as 38 percent of early adopters have chosen it for their vehicle.
The addition of Carbonized Gray gives the 2021 Ford Police Interceptor Utility a total of 17 different exterior color options. The rest of the lineup includes Oxford White, Agate Black, Smokestone, Arizona Beige, Medium Brown, Kodiak Brown, Vermilion Red, Dark Toreador Red, Light Blue, Royal Blue, Blue, Dark Blue, Silver Gray, Medium Titanium, Sterling Gray, and Iconic Silver.
The colors can be paired with one of two interior options – Charcoal Black heavy-duty fabric seats with standard front row and optional rear row maintenance, or Charcoal Black heavy-duty vinyl, which comes standard in the rear row for extra durability and easy cleaning.
Otherwise, the Interceptor 2021 Utility numbers it will carry will be largely unchanged for the new model year. This should come as no surprise since the model’s popularity in the police department remains high.
Ford currently provides about two-thirds of police vehicles in the US, and the automaker sold 18,752 SUVs in 2019 alone.

2021 Ford Explorer 4wd SUV
Ford Explorer 2021 has been completely redesigned last year, unchanged for the effective new model year.
This redesign makes for the large, rear-wheel drive-based crossover with optional all-wheel drive. It also carries some fresh turbocharged engines as well as hybrids.
The result is a much more enjoyable driving experience and a spacious interior.
A new aspect of Explorer 2021 is the addition of the XLT Sport package. It adds dark gray 20-inch wheels that echo the grid, badge, and slip plate accent on the bumper.
It gets a light gray interior with two tonings inside. The rest of the line hasn’t changed.
We were impressed by this new batch treatment of power and engines, basic turbo four-cylinder, hybrid V6, or get a pair of V6 turbo engines that have a serious rush.
Every Explorer is more passionate than ever and more exciting drivers than its three-line competitors. Explorer ST in particular has very impressive use and the most powerful of different models.
Space has not been sacrificed by this new platform, the first two rows are quite wide, and to the third tone. The interior is a bit plastic, but the platinum flooring is accented with a big bright look and some nice upholstery as wooden accents.
The Explorer line starts with XLT and Limited flooring levels, both turbocharged 2.3-liter sequence-four makes 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The rear dank drive is standard with all-wheel drive available as an option.
Combined with 24 mpg fuel economy RWD and 23 mpg AWD. This machine is one of the powerful in its segment, and given the abundance of standard feature content (especially the full suite of collision avoider technologies), there is absolutely nothing wrong with sticking to the base model.
The Explorer Platinum and Explorer ST come with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
It produces 365 hp and 380 lb-ft platinum, and 400 hp and 415 lb-ft ST. The latter is mechanical enhancements and a sporty style enhancer with a variety of other performance features.
Finally, the Explorer Hybrid, available only as Limited, pairs of 3.3-liter V6s with natural aspirations of an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Total output 318 hp. It rotates 28 Mpg along with RWD and 25 mpg along with AWD.

2021 Ford Explorer Black
Agate Black, which recently made some changes to the mid-size crossover for Ford in 2021, as the XLT heated seat makes it standard, offers heated steering as an optional feature in the model, and included eight power-adjustable front passenger seats.
Direction. Limited, st, and platinum models. The Sports View package is now available in XLT flooring and includes 20-inch aluminum wheels covered in Carbonized Gray paint.
As raised wheels, this package also features a mesh grille with a carbonized gray accent as well as a unique under-body finish, dual exhaust outlets, Open Slate-colored interior seats, fake slip plates, and more.
The new cargo operator is optional on XLT, Limited, and ST models; Platinum platinum platinum accepts this feature as standard.
The interior design may not be inspired, the Explorer cabin is functional and comfortable – at least for those in the first two lines.
It’s now easier to get into the standard third-row thanks to a new mechanism that moves second-row seats at the touch of a button.
Once back, however, older children and adults will find seats very close to the ground to be disturbed. Competitors such as the Chevy Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas provide more comfort in third place.
We managed to fit four handbags behind the third line Ford, and we loaded a total of 31 bags with two rows folded evenly in the back.
2021 Ford Explorer Platinum Specs
Chief amongst them is the way that the brand-new Explorer drives. Ford designers say that the rear-drive framework brings a newfound feeling of equilibrium thanks to its enhanced weight distribution, and they’re right.
Where the old version was ponderous and unwieldy, the brand-new one is made up and also accumulated over a selection of terrain.
Overboosted guiding avoids it from feeling especially active, yet correct damping keeps body movements minimal and also the trip liquid and also steady.
While it is far from lively, the Explorer inspires confidence on a twisty roadway as well as has gone from being among the worst-driving three-row family members SUVs to being one of the very best.
Read more: 2021 Ford Explorer ST 4WD Review
The Explorer ST made headlines with its 400-hp V-6 (we will assess that version independently), but engine choices for the rest of the lineup include a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four,
A detuned 365-hp version of the ST’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6, and also a hybrid drivetrain that uses a 3.3-liter V-6 with a single 44-hp electric motor.
The Ford/GM co-developed 10-speed automated is the single transmission choice for every engine, and all Explorers can tow between 5000 and 5600 pounds when outfitted with an optional towing plan.
2021 Ford Explorer Platinum Engine
Thanks to a declared visual weight that’s about 200 pounds lighter than the old Explorer, the 2.3-liter engine is perfectly adequate, with smart transmission mapping taking advantage of the readily available mid-range torque.
The hybrid supplies a bit much more result, at 318 horsepower combined, but it included weight offsets that so its acceleration feels regarding equal to the turbo-four’s from our seat-of-the-pants perspective.
However, the crossbreed’s absence of improvement is a letdown; maybe the harsh change between electric and also gas power as well as the mushy brake pedal can be addressed with much better tuning.
And also they ought to be, offered its $4150 costs over the four-cylinder.
The Explorer hybrid presents a new kind of gas-electric drivetrain arrangement to the Ford lineup that the firm refers to as a Modular Crossbreed Transmission.
Rather than the power-split arrangements seen on lots of smaller sized, extra cost-effective hybrids, the Explorer hybrid does not make use of a planetary gearset or twin electric motor-generators.
Instead, it puts a solitary 44-hp electrical motor in between the V-6 gas engine and also the 10-speed transmission.
Meant for larger cars that are suggested to tow as well as haul, this hybrid system relies less on the electrical motor and also concentrates much more on power as well as capability than fuel-sipping.
We presume that comparable gas-electric powertrains will make their way right into the guaranteed hybrid versions of the next-generation F-150 pick-up as well as the upcoming Bronco SUV.
The twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine readily available in the Platinum, on the other hand, packs an actual punch. Despite being detuned a little from the ST’s 400-hp version, the 365-hp listen the Platinum moves the Explorer around with authority and appears good too.
2021 Ford Explorer Price
Minority driver-assist systems that don’t come criterion are supplied as fairly priced alternatives, and also desirable attributes such as a power liftgate as well as three-zone automated environment control are included across the board.
Mainstream four-cylinder XLT and Limited versions are valued competitively in the high-$ 30,000 to high-$ 40,000 variety, as well as for that sort of cash the Explorer is a compelling competitor in the nonluxury three-row SUV bunch. (A less costly base design that starts in the low $30,000 s looms.).
Paying virtually $55,000 for the crossbreed or perhaps past $60K for a completely packed Platinum version is a harder sell.
You can get the closely associated as well as extra nicely selected Lincoln Aviator with the same twin-turbocharged V-6 for similar cash, as well as some seriously opulent European SUVs for just a few thousand more.
Yet the fact that we can also talk about the Explorer in this sort of firm with a straight face implies that this residential SUV has actually gotten in a new milieu, not the very least of all as a result of what’s taking place underneath it.
2021 Ford Explorer Platinum Release Date
You can anticipate seeing the brand-new 2020 Ford Explorer on the ground at Muzi and also various other MA Ford Dealerships this June or July.
