2023 Ford Maverick is a compact pickup truck entering its second year after a successful debut. The compact pickup market dead just a few years ago has seen a resurgence over the past few years.

Maverick offers reasonable utility, good fuel economy, and many features available at a much lower price than other Ford trucks, F-150 and Ranger.

It’s not the most capable truck in terms of towing, payload, or off-road capability, but Ford offers other options if you need more. Maverick has just debuted for 2022, so we’re not expecting a major update for 2023.

That said, a spy image of a Maverick camouflaged with a double exhaust pipe has appeared recently, suggesting that a performance-oriented version (probably Maverick ST?) may be on the way.

Currently, there is only one other real option in this class: Hyundai Santa Cruz. Like the Maverick, the Santa Cruz is a small four-door pick up, though the Hyundai feels more like a crossover SUV than a truck from behind the wheel. 5

If you need more than Maverick offers, there’s the Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier, which have lately undergone their redesigns.

2023 Ford Maverick Review

The 2023 Ford Maverick proves less could be more, at least when it comes to compact pickup truck buyers who want a versatile vehicle that doesn’t carry the asking price or result in sky-high fuel bills.

Introduced just last year, we don’t anticipate much (if any) change to Ford’s small pickup for the 2023 model year.

With the entry-level Maverick coming in at around $20,000, Ford has priced its smallest truck well below the mid-size Ranger and full-size F-150.

Based on the same unibody platform used in the Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs, Maverick’s driving behavior could lead anyone who never thought would consider considering a pickup.

From behind the wheel, the Maverick is easy to drive and also as well-mannered as a typical small SUV. The handling was accurate and the ride was never proven to be punishing on rough pavement.

What helped Maverick stand out was the fuel economy provided by the standard 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain. It combines a 2.5-liter inline-4 with an electric motor that delivers 191-horsepower and 155 lb.-ft of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Equipped with this engine and running a regular-grade gasoline diet, Maverick returned an EPA estimate of 42 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway. That’s impressive for an economy car, let alone a small pickup truck!

Optional is an inline-4 turbocharged 2.0-liter turbocharged 250-horsepower engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and your choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive (AWD).

That’s right, if you want an AWD in your Maverick, that means going up to this more powerful 4-cylinder turbo. When properly equipped, Maverick can pull 4,000 pounds – this drops to just 2,000 pounds if you choose a hybrid machine.

While the cabin is useful and there’s a lot of hard plastic strewn around here and there, it’s a functional and user-friendly place to spend your time. Adults have plenty of headroom and legroom in both rows, while standard features like an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and two USB ports help ensure Maverick keeps up with the times, technologically.

Anyone exploring off-road will want to consider the FX4 trim which includes the under-body skid plate, all-terrain tires, improved suspension, and driving modes for mud and sand. The model comes with an optional 4-cylinder turbo and AWD.

While the 4.5-foot cargo bed isn’t very spacious – at least by truck standards – it includes several smart cleats and cargo fastening channels to keep cargo in place. The only direct rival of the 2023 Ford Maverick is the equally new Hyundai Santa Cruz.

2023 Maverick Changes

2023 Ford Maverick Changes, Like most new vehicles on the planet these days, production of the 2022 Ford Maverick is severely limited due to chip shortages and other supply chain constraints.

In addition, Maverick has experienced tremendous demand that has far exceeded Ford’s expectations of a cheap and affordable pickup, further complicating matters.

Thus, Ford stopped taking orders for Maverick 2022 earlier this year, and as the Ford Authority reported in December 2023, the Ford Maverick order bank will open in August upcoming.

However, sources familiar with the matter have now told the Ford Authority that production will start one day earlier than previously scheduled.

Previously, the Ford Maverick 2023 order bank was scheduled to open on August 16, 2022, but now, the order will open on August 15.

However, the production of Maverick 2023 is still scheduled to begin at the Hermosillo assembly plant on October 24, although this date is subject to change, as usual, especially given the large number of supply chain problems that automakers continue to face.

As the Ford Authority reported in February, some 2022 Maverick orders may also be pushed back to the 2023 model year, which has happened with several other Blue Oval models in the last month.

This is especially true for selected pickups with items in limited supply while ignoring the feature can speed up shipping, on the other hand.

The fuel economy is outstanding with the standard hybrid powertrain, and we’ve found minimal performance differences between hybrid and turbo-four setups that are more powerful yet significantly less efficient. We were impressed with the suspension that suited the Maverick and the handling was a lot of fun as well.

However, there are several reasons to choose a larger machine; for the 2022 model year, this is the only way to get the FX4 off-road package, the 4K Towing package, and the independent rear suspension.

The truck won the comparison with the Hyundai Santa Cruz for its outstanding value, box-shaped style, and clever interior. We’re looking forward to seeing if Ford provides any of those options on the standard hybrid model for the 2023 Maverick.

Speaking of the interior, it deserves special praise. Not only does Ford provide meticulous storage solutions, but the blend of materials, textures, and shapes also creates a low-cost interior that doesn’t feel cheesy. That said, the seats lack much support and the rear seats will be tight for six feet.

As a package, Maverick reintroduced the compact pickup as a legitimate option for buyers which is an additional capability of an open bed without poor fuel economy, sluggish handling, and rich prices for larger trucks. Well done.

2023 Ford Maverick Engine

Ford surprised us with the Maverick’s standard hybrid powertrain. It pairs a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder with a 1.1 kWh battery, an electric motor, and an automatic CVT for a combined 191 hp and 155 lb.-ft of torque delivered through the front wheels.

We have a strong suspicion That Ford will add AWD in the coming years. Fuel economy is the best of all pickup trucks on the market, with the Maverick hybrid returning 42/33 mpg city/highway and when we tested it, it reached 60 mph in 7.6 seconds.

For those who want more power and AWD, Ford also offers the Maverick with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine. The engine was offered with FWD or AWD, as well as the FX4 off-road package and a 4K tow package. speed, not a hybrid CVT.

With an extra dose of power, the 2.0-liter Maverick shot up to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds but the efficiency figure dropped to 22-23/29-30 mpg.

Automatic emergency braking and automatic remote lights are standard in all variants. If you can spend a little more money, adaptive cruise control, fixed-track assistance, blind spot monitoring, and rear traffic alerts are on the table.

Crane and Load Capacity

Yes, small, but Maverick is still capable of working. With a hybrid setup, it can accommodate up to 1,500 pounds in the bed, plus there is enough space for a standard ATV.

This hybrid is only rated for pulling 2,000 pounds, but if you use a turbo-four with a 4K towing package, Maverick can pull up to 4,000 pounds. We pulled a 3,000-pound trailer in such a truck, and it felt like home.

Technology

We don’t see Ford changing the infotainment settings in Maverick 2023, which means it will likely continue with an 8.0-inch touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Maverick’s standard Wi-Fi hotspot can support up to 10 devices.

Ford has said before that it is considering a sporty Maverick to be placed next to the carp’s frugal Hybrid and EcoBoost powertrains from pickups, but there hasn’t been much news to share in the section front of it these days. Until last week.

That’s when our intrepid spy photographer caught the lower, more aggressive Maverick roaming around, boasting a double exhaust stacked on the rear bumper and wider bodywork hiding the wheels big and big.

Lowered over a set of lacy 20-inch wheels, our electronic Maverick also offers a fender extension that hides wider tracks for improved stability and handling.

Around the rear, there is a black tailgate word sign as well as a vertical exhaust mounted on every corner of the bumper – a design cue borrowed from the Edge ST.

Despite the spy photos, Blue Oval still hasn’t confirmed whether it will produce a sporty version of the pickup for sale alongside other Ford products such as the F-150 Raptor and Explorer ST.

When and if that happens, it’s more likely that Maverick will lean more towards sporty on-road performance, rather than Baja’s incredible desert speed.

We thought it would probably use a Ford heat engine, a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four, that produces up to 330 horsepower (243 kilowatts) on the Mustang.

Backing it up will be a 10-speed automatic, although our enthusiastic hearts hope that the Focus RS’s six-speed manual will come back again.

Like the Focus RS, the Maverick ST is expected to be an all-wheel drive, and the unique sport, Track, and Drift hot hatch modes may appear as well.

Just imagine a pickup sliding through a path with smoke billowing from all four-wheel wells, followed by a Nissan 240SX and a Toyota Corolla AE86. Try not to laugh, we challenge you.

Unfortunately, our Maverick ST is just a dream – for now. But Ford says it measures the interest of such vehicles, so if you want to see a cheap and cheerful pickup turn into a pocket rocket with a cargo bed, make your voice heard.

2023 Ford Maverick Price

Look for a 2023 Ford Maverick with front-wheel drive (FWD) and a standard hybrid powertrain priced at around $20,000. That’s thousands cheaper than pickup truck buyers would pay for a medium-sized truck, such as the Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier.

It’s also a few thousand inferior to Hyundai Santa Cruz’s compact truck — though to be fair, the Hyundai comes with more standard features and a classier cabin.

Adding more powerful 250-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinders adds about $1,000 to the Maverick price, while AWD pushes this up to about $3,300.

Maverick in XLT trim with optional inline-4 hybrid or turbo orders about $23,000 to $25,000.

Add the available Luxury Packages that include popular features such as spray bed upholstery, long-distance start, heated seats, power adjustable driver’s seat, and two additional USB ports, and you can pay around $25,000 to $28,000.

The top-of-the-line Lariat trim technically starts at around $26,000, although loading on every available option can easily add $10K to the price.

The Maverick is not only the most efficient pickup on the market but also the most affordable—one that is unlikely to change for 2023.

The 2022 entry-level Maverick XL with a hybrid powertrain starts at around $21,500, the XLT starts at around $24,000, and the best-spec Lariat is close to $27,000. For the 2022 truck, a 2.0-liter turbo-four is a $ 1, 085 option.

Our choice? We’ll get a hybrid XLT—almost identical performance to 2.0 liters and the efficiency figures are incredible. If they offer it with AWD for 2023, the choice will be easier.

2023 Ford Maverick Release Date

According to Car Buzz, orders for Maverick 2023 will begin on August 16, 2022. Meanwhile, production is expected to start in October 2022. However, dates like this are subject to change.

Especially with supply chain issues and all the other elements that come with producing new vehicles.

Regardless of whether or not the order opens on the projected date, we expect the 2023 Ford Maverick to build on the success of the 2022 model. As a small pickup truck, the Maverick offers a relatively affordable price.

Especially in a world where new trucks can easily sell for over $50,000. With a basic MSRP of around $20,000, Maverick points out that you don’t need to be expensive to be good.

Despite the 2022 Ford Maverick order closing, Ford continues to invest in its small trucks. If you only need to have Maverick now, there is always a secondary market. Alternatively, you can try your luck at the dealership.

But, waiting to order Maverick 2023 in August may be the best option.
